March 16… GCHA “DIGS LOCAL HISTORY”
Come to hear a free lecture, and picture presentation, by Archeologist and Hofstra Professor, Jenna Copelin. Professor Copelin has spent the last two summers excavating the Lloyd Harbor Estate known as the Joseph Lloyd Manor. This site is already known as the residence of Jupiter Hammon, one of the first published African-American poets. Professor Copelin will present information on what they uncovered on this historic site and how the artifacts they found can answer key questions about Hammon’s life and Long Island slave culture in general. This program will be presented in the Harborfields Library at 7:30 pm. Please call 631-754-1180 to register
March 31…Tuesdays at the office
For inquiring minds that want to know what is in our collection, we are establishing TUESDAYS AT THE OFFICE. Starting on March 31 all members interested can join us at the Russell Brush Research Center located at the Harborfields Library. If you enjoy old documents, maps, photos, etc. we will be rummaging through our collection to familiarize people with what’s in there. Join us at 10 am on Tuesdays and find a project that intrigues you. No registration required.
April 1…”IF THESE THINGS COULD TALK”
Share an entertaining evening with us. Select a favorite item, artifact, document, letter, photograph, or family heirloom. Bring that item, and tell us the story! Mysterious and unusual items are preferred. You are welcome to come and just listen, but sharing is half the fun. Time permitting, we hope to hear many interesting tales that will jog our memories about similar experiences. This program will be held in the Gardiner Barn Welcome Center, 900 Park Avenue, at 7:30 pm. Parking is available on the grounds. Light refreshments will be available at 7 pm, please call 754-1180 to register
APRIL 18… An Afternoon Tea, 1930’s Style
Have you wanted to see the Gardiner Farmhouse? Moms and their grown children or those over 6 years old are invited to an afternoon tea party in the barn and then will get a tour of the farmhouse, set as if the Gardiners were living in it during the 1930’s. Girls may want to bring their dolls, (they are not required but are invited at no extra charge) Food will include depression era sandwiches and cakes. Drinks will be tea or juice, all presented in a lady like way. We will also include a presentation on manners of the ‘30s as well as other information on the times.
Join us on Saturday afternoon at 900 Park Avenue, from 3 to 5 pm. Cost will be $10 for non-members, and $5 for members and children under 12. Call 754-1180 to register.

CELEBRATION OF EARTH DAY
GCHA gathered a small group at the Gardiner Farm and joined in the numerous Earth Day celebrations throughout the town of Huntington. They raked and recycled the many bottles and cans along Little Plains Road and Park Avenue. They also readied the farm area for Spring planting. Enjoying the unreported sunshine were members of the Garden Club and GCHA members. At the same time, another group of volunteers was cleaning up at the Suydam house on Centerport Road. They extended their efforts to include the Grace Preserve, the Town owned park, that is adjacent to our property. Hopefully Suydam will act as a trail head to provide access to the trails and to the historic log cabin in that park. It will require cooperation and hard work, but the result will be an enhanced opportunity for the public to experience Centerport as it was over 100 years ago.
Thanks to all who recognized our desire to "think globally and act locally".
DISCOVERY!!
This piece of tombstone was discovered behind the red barn on the Suydam property. Four letters were discernible, "VAIL", but it is unknown whether they were part of a name or part of a saying on the stone. Research is being done on names in the area and possible answers to this puzzle. |
