SCOPE AND CONTENTS

The collection contains the papers of the Suydam family of Centerport dating from 1753 to the present. The bulk of the materials date from the early to mid-1800s. Some contemporary materials have been added through the documentation and research for the restoration of the Suydam Homestead. Additional family papers are periodically added as donated by family and friends. Family members represented in the collection are so indicated on the genealogy chart. Copy books, books, and family photographs comprise the bulk of the collection. Valuable information about rural life on north shore Long Island can be gleaned from the legal and financial documents, correspondence, the memoirs of Mary Emma Suydam Chalmers, the recollections of John E. Suydam, Ethel Suydam Witting and her oral histories. Additional items of interest are papers and photographs relating to the Centerport School, accounts of the sloop MARY EMMA built by Cornelius Suydam, and poetry found in the copy books.
